Several inmates from the Cebongan Penitentiary in Sleman, Yogyakarta,
testified that they saw victim Yohanes Juan Manbait toss a pair of crutches at
the door of prison cell No. A5, which was unlocked by a prison guard, several
moments before a man entered and shot the four detainees.
The witnesses statements, however, were different
from the information in the dossiers.
"After prison guard Tri Widodo opened the
door, Juan tossed the crutches at the door but the defendant had not yet
entered the cell," witness Ucup Suryana testified in a hearing that
involved second sergeants Ucok Tigor Simbolon and Sugeng Sumaryanto as well as
First Cpl. Kodik at the Yogyakarta Military Court on Monday.
Juan was one of the four detainees transferred to
the prison by the Yogyakarta Police. The four were shot and killed by members
of the Army's Special Forces' (Kopassus) Group 2 on March 23.
Sitting quite close to the detendants, seven other
witnesses — Imam Bahrudin, Agung Risnawan, Yusup Panguluhi Sihotang, Sugeng
Darmanto, Agung Kristanto, Anwarudin and Jumari, also testified.
Ucup's statement was supported by Yusup, Agung and
Anwarudin. However, Yusup and Agung only saw Juan lift the crutches and heard
them being tossed. They did not see the crutches hit the target, while Anwarudin
saw Juan beside the door holding crutches.
"This is a new development. The witnesses'
testimony did not appear in ihe dossiers. Which one is correct?" asked
presiding judge Lt. Col. Djoko Sasmito.
The four witnesses then claimed the testimony given
in court was the truth.
Witnesses in previous hearings suid they did not
see Juan attack because when the executor entered the cell, Juan and his two
friends were at the eastern corner of the cell while a larger group of inmates
were gathering at the western corner of the cell.
The trial will adjourn on Wednesday to hear the
testimonies of five Kopassus members accused in the second case dossier. (Bambang Muryanto), Sumber Koran: THE
